Week 4

beginner prompts:

#1 magazine bits

This week I want you to add bits and pieces from magazines on as many pages throughout your journal as you can. You could cut out random bits, or focus on a theme like “faces” It’s your journal, your playtime, YOU decide! Keep it simple and have FUN!

*TIP: Remember we are layering throughout your journal. Add these magazine bits on top of some of your beginning layers throughout your journal.

Add variety to the sizes of your magazine bits…small, medium and large!

*TIP: Remember you can add more layers to your pages by using previous prompts throughout the challenge. Each week is an add on. So, add as much or as  little as you choose!

My first real attempt at using magazine bits in my journal. Out. of. my. comfort. zone.

#2 letters

Add letters throughout your journal. Draw them! Cut them out and glue them to your page! Make them thick! Make them thin! Write in cursive. Write in print. No thinking. Just play!

You can take it a step further and practice patterns with your letters!

*Tip: Remember the purpose of this challenge, to learn through PLAY. You are purposely making messes not masterpieces at this point. If you’ve made something beautiful, you are probable doing it wrong! 🙂

intermediate prompts:

#1 hand lettering

Practice hand lettering words or phrases. This can be intimidating, but do not fear! At this point you could experiment with your own handwriting. Thick lines. Thin lines. Loops. Block lettering. You will probably hate your own lettering. That’s ok! This is practice. This too, is a part of our learning process. No worries, it may be covered up at some point in our journey together! Putting in the time to practice is what is important!

*Tip: One of the most important aspects of art journaling (that seems counter-intuitive) is layering – the process of covering up parts or all of previous layers. By layering, covering up some or all of the work you have put down previously, your work becomes more interesting with more texture and depth.

Yep, these will probably be covered up, but at least it is practice!

#2 bug-a-doodle bits
This week I want you to add some bug-a-doodle bits to your art journal.  Bug-a-Doodle Bits are free printables of my original artwork I have created that I offer free online here. I can’t wait to see how you incorporate them into your art journal!

*TIP: When gluing bug-a-doodle bits to your art journal, make sure your glue is completely dry before moving on to another page. Stuck pages, holes and tears happens if you get into too much of a hurry!

Since I normally work in bright colors with flower designs I decided to print out copies of Bug-a-Doodle Bits in black and white and collage with them to try something a little different.

I drew this bird onto tracing paper, colored it, cut it out and glued it into my art journal.

Now, it’s YOUR turn!

Remember we are making messes, not masterpieces (not yet, anyway!). This challenge is an exercise in play, experimentation and practice without the stress of perfectionism.
