Hello to You – I’m glad you’re here!

I’ve been trying to get going creating now that my studio space exists again and has a few things in it. It’s rough going so I pulled out a book or two and found this one about doodling. Whew – doodling is something I can handle!

Do you doodle much? You should try it! We’ve all doodled a few marks on a page at times: on hold, in a meeting, waiting in line… It’s an intuitive and very personal way to make art as well as being non-threatening. There’s no pressure about the final product, it’s just a doodle!

Best part of all – it’s super easy! Here are a few ideas inspired by the book. (These are actual doodles observed in the wild and no doodles were harmed in the writing of this message.)

Lines and Marks

Doodle around with pen or pencil strokes and see what happens. You can combine patches of hatching and cross-hatching and other types of marks.

Lettering

Most of us have doodled lettering at one point. No matter how you feel about your handwriting, it’s a great way to add interest to plain notes and letters. Try a few simple techniques like outlining, embellishing and shading to spice up your letter doodles.

Shapes

Triangles, squares, hearts, blobs – shapes are a great place to start doodling because they’re easy to draw and noodle around with. You can combine different ones or repeat the same shape over and over with variations for maximum impact.

Just Doodle!

It’s super easy to start making your own marks so go ahead and doodle a bit. You might surprise yourself!
