My Art Journal Page Isn’t Working, Now What?

Let’s Fix Your Page!

Hey There!

Now that the house renovation is (mostly) over, it’s time to move in and start putting the studio to rights. That’s a ton of decisions about what goes where, wondering how I’m going to use things and work in the space and the almost certain knowledge that I’ll get a good part of it wrong. So, I’m taking it slowly and seeing how it develops – just like an art project. Let’s hope I don’t get stuck in the middle!

Speaking of stuck art projects – have you run into the dreaded “stuck” phase? Wouldn’t it be great if there was a (sort of) easy fix for that? Try this one!

When your page isn’t working and you don’t know what to do next, here are two things that are often missing.

  1. Lack of a focal point. There’s just nothing specific to grab your eye with little to no variation of elements across the page.
  2. Not enough contrast. All the colors are in the middle with no really dark or light places.

These two things together add up to a page that just sits there and goes “blaaaaah.” So, a fast fix is to drop a large dark and dramatic shape onto the page. If that sounds a little scary, try it out with a cut out paper shape and see what it does.

Once you have that focal point in place, work around the page adding more dark and light values – don’t be timid – that contrast will make your page pop!

Give this fast fix a try – it can work wonders on those problem pages and I’d love to hear how it works for you!

If you’d like more hands-on help, I’ll be opening a live help desk in a private group where you can bring your projects to a mini-art lesson and find out what you need to know to move forward. I’ll be personally working with each member to help you get your art moving again and each session will have limited seats at the desk.
